Student Health Insurance: Claim options

The unique Student Health & Medical Insurance plan from Freedom Healthnet provides a variety of different options when you claim.

The process of a student health insurance claim is straightforward: after your doctor, whether your home doctor or the doctor you are registered with at university, has recommended you to a specialist and the consultant has confirmed the requirement for inpatient treatment, you complete a claim form. We then contact your doctor. Once your doctor has confirmed the details you submit on your form and your claim has been authorised, we will put the money directly into your bank account - usually within 5 working days.

When your medical claim has been processed and paid you have 3 options:

  1. Book into a private hospital for your treatment
  2. Have your treatment on the NHS and keep the money
  3. Go abroad to have your treatment

Private Hospital

You can choose which private hospital you would like to have your treatment in. Because we are not affiliated with any private hospital group, you are not limited to one hospital network. You can choose which type of private hospital you are treated in: BUPA, BMI, Nuffield, HCA, Capio or any other.

You have cash in your bank account to pay for your treatment. This means you are considered to be a 'self pay' customer. As such, there are discounts available on the standard price of an operation and, by choosing to have your treatment on the days when there are surplus beds, you are in a good bargaining position with the hospitals.

As a result of paying cash for your operation and gaining a discount, you could end up with walking away with a surplus. This money is yours to keep, tax free.

NHS Treatment

One of the benefits of private health insurance is speed of treatment: you can be operated on within a matter of days or weeks, whatever you choose. However, some operations in NHS hospitals do not have a waiting list and private treatment is not necessary. In these cases, when you claim has been authorised and paid into your account, you can be treated on the NHS and keep the money. You could benefit by thousands of pounds, tax free, to spend on a holiday with your family to help you recover, for example, or keep the money to spend on something you really need.

Treatment Abroad

Increasingly, we Brits are choosing to go abroad for our treatment. The trend started with plastic surgery (not usually covered by private health insurance) when people chose to go the US, Europe or even India for their breast augmentation, facelifts, etc. to benefit from the expertise of a particular consultant and, often lower prices, found outside of the UK.

The Freedom PMI for students enables you to go outside the country for your treatment, if you choose to do so to either 1. save money on your operation or 2. benefit from expertise found elsewhere.
