The most important feature of hospital care abroad is the quality of the Surgeon or Physician. The owner of Medical Treatment Overseas worked in Malta as a Hospital Chief Executive for 3 years and knows their expertise and standards to be high. All consultants in Malta are trained and qualified to UK consultant standards and therefore are as good as their UK colleagues.

Nursing staff in the hospital are also highly trained in Malta to standards monitored by the UK College of Nursing.

The language of all staff in the hospital is English, so when the ward orderly brings you your cup of tea you can be sure to hear the local gossip - if that is what you want!

But why are Maltese medical prices low? The answer is simply that the cost of living in Malta is about half that of UK and so local prices reflect that.

Costs of Treatment in Malta

Once a UK patient makes an enquiry, the doctor in Malta gets all the relevant information and can confirm the treatment plan and length of stay in the hospital and hotel. A date is then agreed. A 10% deposit is required, made payable to St. James Hospital, Malta.

Flights are extra and you can make your own flight arrangements or ask the organisation to do that for you. Air Malta flies from about 12 major airports in UK and Ireland. Prices vary from £100 to £250 return depending on when you book or fly. Other airlines can also provide flight bargains.

Treatment in Malta

When the patient arrives in Malta Airport, they are met at the airport and driven to The Victoria Hotel which is next door to the hospital. Occasionally another quality hotel is selected nearby.

The next day the patient sees the doctor and has tests. The day after that, the patient is usually admitted to hospital for treatment and stays in hospital for an appropriate length of time before returning to the hotel. The hospital is on call from the hotel 24 / 7. The doctor will have decided on an appropriate length of time for the patient to stay in the hotel before returning home, as part of the previously-agreed treatment plan.

Physiotherapy may be part of the programme, and continues until the patient leaves Malta. The patient will see the doctor before he or she leaves the island to return to the UK.

Most patients like to bring a companion. The cost of the companion's stay is extra and may cost around £350 for 2 weeks, but will vary, depending on the length of stay and the season.

Some patients like to extend their stay in Malta and enjoy more of this mediterranean holiday island.
